The Vagina - a Reading Circle with Emma Rees

7.30pm

Join author Emma Rees for an intimate group reading from The Vagina (pp. 1 - 40).

In our postmodern, porn-obsessed culture, vaginas appear to be everywhere, literally or symbolically but, crucially, they are as silenced as they are objectified. The Vagina: A Literary and Cultural History examines the paradox of female genitalia through five fields of artistic expression: literature, film, TV, visual, and performance art. This evening is a limited chance to meet, read and discuss with a truly celebrated author. Join the reading circle for what promises to be a special and thought-provoking evening…

Emma Rees is Professor of Literature and Gender Studies at the University of Chester. Throughout her career, Emma has written extensively on representations of gender in literature and culture, considering the work of Shakespeare, Margaret Cavendish and Led Zeppelin. Her occasional columns for the Times Higher Education take an at times light-hearted look at academic life. Emma was awarded the inaugural Gladstone’s Library Political Writer in Residence prize for The Vagina, which was published in paperback by Bloomsbury earlier this year.
