Event Content Information
Everyone is welcome to attend a course or event here at Gladstone’s Library. We welcome anyone who feels they will benefit from attending, no matter your age or educational background. So that you get the best from any event or course we work hard to ensure that all our advertising gives you a good idea of what a course or event will include.
Gladstone’s Library works closely with any course leader or event speaker to develop the themes, content and advertising of their event or course. However, Gladstone’s Library does not check all course or event content, imagery, or method of delivery, and we cannot guarantee that our courses or events will not deviate from what is advertised. Our courses aim to be educational, and there is sometimes short preparatory reading, but it is likely that you will find that our courses are not delivered in a manner consistent with Further or Higher Education, e.g. reading lists, a seminar structure, etc.
We do not issue separate content warnings, as we understand our content to be for a mainly adult audience. We define a content warning as covering issues such as pandemics, animal cruelty, graphic nudity, or challenging imagery (for example images of the Holocaust or chattel slavery). It is likely clear from a course or event’s title and description if such content is to be expected. If a course or event includes content from work that is legally restricted, such as a 15- or 18-rated film, we will make this clear in the description.
We do issue separate, clearly-stated trigger warnings wherever possible. We define a trigger warning as covering content that is distressing for anyone with a history of trauma. Topics such as death or dying, terminal illness, sexual violence, racism, enslavement, Islamophobia or anti-Semitism are all issues that have been discussed here at the Library in positive educational ways, but we want the Library’s advertising to give potential audience members the chance to make up their minds well before they purchase a ticket or arrive at the Library.
If you have concerns or wish to ask a question about specific content that would be helpful to your decision to participate in a course or event here at the Library, please contact us directly on [email protected] and either the Warden or Director of Collections and Research will respond.
