Open Lecture: Gladstone and his Library
Friday 5th July at 5pm
Tickets £10. Places have sold out. Please email [email protected] to ask to be placed on a waiting list.

Have you ever thought about the origins of Gladstone's Library? The curious may have come across the short explanations given during our Glimpse tours, on the Library's website and on the leaflets given to visitors, but the roots of William Ewart Gladstone's decision to make his personal collection available to the public deserve further exploration.

In 'Gladstone and his Library', Professor David Bebbington will delve deeper into the four-times Prime Minister's motivations and designs when setting up the Library. David is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Stirling, and serves as Director of the Evangelical Studies Program at Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and his publications include The Mind of Gladstone: Religion, Homer and Politics.

(This lecture is delivered as part of the Gladstone Umbrella)
