Britain and the American Dream with Peter Moore | GLADFEST 2023 - book for lunch and launch offer

Britain and the American Dream with Peter Moore
1-2pm on Friday 8th September

Tickets can no longer be purchased via our website. The remaining in-person tickets can be bought from our Reception and will be available at our on-site box office on September 8th and 9th.

How did ‘the West’ get where we are now? Why do we hold the cultural principles that we do? Where did they come from? How did it begin?

In his forthcoming book historian Peter Moore explores these questions through the eyes of the generation that preceded the Declaration of Independence in 1776. You might think that of all documents, the Declaration would be uniquely American – but as Peter will share in his Gladfest talk, it owes a lot to British thinkers…

Featuring among others Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Johnson, the ground-breaking historian Catherine Macaulay, firebrand politician John Wilkes and revolutionary activist Thomas Paine, the book takes us back to a vital moment in the West’s foundation.

Historian, writer and podcaster Peter Moore is the author of three books. Peter’s writing is characterised by his ability to capture transformative historical moments through eye-catching activities, be that our scientific understanding (The Weather Experiment), how we enact justice (Damn His Blood), or world geography (Endeavour). As one of the Travels Through Time podcast team, Peter can regularly be found speculating on the endlessly fascinating question: if you could travel back in time, where would you go? Peter’s latest book is the forthcoming Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, due later this year.
