LEARNING DAY: History of the Baltic States from antiquity to the Present Day - with Dan Kaszeta SOLD OUT
History of the Baltic States from antiquity to the Present Day
Saturday 9th March, 10.30am – 3.30pm
Masterclass tickets are £65 and include a two course lunch and a tea or filter coffee. Email [email protected] to join the reserve list.
Please note that this is a learning day, different in format to the usual creative writing masterclass offered by writers-in-residence.
Despite their rich histories, the history, culture and politics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is largely unknown to many people. If it’s unknown to you, too, then this day seminar run by writer-in-residence and lifelong defence specialist Dan Kaszeta is for you. While writing his forthcoming book The Forest Brotherhood: Baltic Resistance against the Nazis and Soviets, Dan drew on archival material rarely seen outside the Baltic states, learning a history of resistance almost entirely unknown in the West. As Dan suggests, all three countries face difficulties in preserving their culture, language, and history when surrounded by bigger countries – a discussion that has rich parallels with Wales.
Working with Dan, who is of partial Lithuanian ancestry, participants will cover an overview of the history of the region, including their experience in WWII, their emergence (and re-emergence) into independence, the process of building a state identity – and most recently, their relationship with Russia and the war in Ukraine.
Tickets available here. Masterclass tickets are £65 and include a two course lunch and a tea or filter coffee.
