The Evolution of Democracy and Global Risks in the 21st Century

2pm

It was Gladstone who wrote ‘to serve Armenia is to serve civilisation’ and this was due to a passionate belief in human rights and a sense of solidarity with Christian martyrs. It was during Gladstone’s campaign of support for Armenia that the phrase ‘crimes against humanity’ was first coined.

Following a distinguished career as a physicist in Yerevan and Cambridge, Professor Sarkissian worked with Harvard’s Kennedy School of Governance and the Global Leadership Foundation promoting democratic institutions, open markets, human rights and the rule of law. He served as Prime Minister of Armenia in the 1990s, the country’s Ambassador to London from 1998, and was elected President of Armenia in 2018. He visited Gladstone’s Library in 2017 and acknowledged Armenia’s debt to Gladstone as well as his own admiration for Gladstone as a person of faith, an exemplar of human rights, and as someone who strove to evolve modern democracy.

Tickets are priced at £20, which includes Strawberry Tea.
