Price: £45 (to include lunch and refreshments). Tickets have sold out. Email [email protected] to join the cancellation waiting list.

Poet and workshop facilitator Jonathan Davidson leads this day workshop with a difference. Aimed at anyone with an interest in poetry – particularly those who love to hear poetry read – the day will look at different ways in which poetry can be enjoyed through sharing. No previous experience will be required and although poets are most welcome, the focus will be on enjoying already loved poems rather than writing new ones.

The day will start with a gentle stroll through the grounds of the nearby Hawarden Old Park, along undulating but reasonably well-made paths (although stout shoes are recommended). As we travel, we’ll be stopping beneath large trees or before splendid views to share the reading of poems that seem apt – to be provided by Jonathan. Our route will be around a mile-and-a-half and our speed will never go above a ‘saunter’.

On our return and after a quick break for refreshments, we will spend the rest of the day exploring other ways of enjoying the sharing of poetry. These will include reading poems quietly to a partner, reading aloud to two or three others and finally reading aloud as a group. Again, we’ll be using a selection of pre-existing poems, although participants are welcome to bring along a short poem of their own if they wish.

By the end of the day – following a nice lunch in the on-site restaurant – we will have enjoyed all sorts of poems in all sorts of ways and may well have the makings of Gladstone’s Library’s first ‘poetry choir’! This should be a wonderful day for anyone who enjoys poetry and wants to re-discover the pleasures of listening and speaking.
