The coronation of King Charles III on 6 May, the first in the United Kingdom for 70 years, will focus attention on the sacred and spiritual dimension of the British monarchy. Often overlooked in favour of constitutional questions or celebrity style gossip and revelations, the religious aspect is at the heart of monarchy. This element will be highlighted at the coronation, a service of Christian worship in which the new king will be anointed with holy oil in direct imitation of the rituals used for ancient Israelite kings and invested with regalia rich in spiritual meaning and symbolism.

In this course, Ian Bradley, Emeritus Professor of Cultural and Spiritual History, and author of three books on the spiritual heart of the monarchy, including the just published God Save the King: The Sacred Nature of Monarchy, will reflect on this theme from a Biblical, historical and contemporary cultural viewpoint. He will explore notions of kingship in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian New Testament, the archetype of sacred kingship as it is found in primal religion and contemporary culture and the way that Christian monarchy has developed in the British Isles. The course includes a public lecture on the history, significance and meaning of the coronation and ends with consideration of the monarch’s roles as protector of Protestantism, Supreme Governor of the Church of England and Defender of (the) Faith, how far they need to be adapted and modified in contemporary Britain and whether the monarchy should move in a more sacred or secular direction.
