Art and Faith, Light and Darkness

As the days lengthen, join us to explore the play of light and shade in art and in faith. Artists know that light and darkness – what the Italians call ‘chiaroscuro’ – brings art to life. Photographers, training the lens on all life, have long worked with the negative process, where dark creates light, and vice versa.
Biblical and spiritual tradition is rich in images of light and dark. In the paradox of ‘luminous darkness’, artists, poets, prophets and contemplatives have found beauty, hope, and meaning beyond the ‘light of the world’. This weekend will be an opportunity to engage with a vivid range of art, from the Middle Ages to the present, and to think in new ways about shadows and the light in times of both peace and crisis.
Debbie is Senior Lecturer in History of Art at the University of Glasgow. She is a specialist in 20th-century German art and in the rich relationship between art and theology.
