Call for Submissions - Contribute to the Sea of Faith Archive

Are you a member of Sea of Faith, or were you in the past?

Contribute to the Sea of Faith Archive at Gladstone’s Library, and to have your views recorded for the future.

In September 2024 Gladstone’s Library will celebrate both forty years since Sea of Faith was first broadcast, and the global network it inspired. Click here to find out more about our upcoming Sea of Faith conference, Listen, a Discussion of the Sea of Faith, held Friday 20th September - Saturday 21st September (bookings open at the time of writing).

Gladstone’s Library has held records relating to Sea of Faith since Don Cupitt deposited it here in 2011. During the gathering we plan to exhibit items from the archive, reflecting the significant role played by letters generated by Don, the movement, as well as the television broadcast and subsequent debates.

However, there are a number of ethical considerations that will restrict what we can show:

- Data protection regulations mean that anonymizing everything is
mandatory; this includes handwriting and all identifying information.
- Copyright law means that we cannot legally reproduce any item in the
archive unless it’s authored by Don Cupitt.

Due to these conditions there will be letters that embody the movement’s thinking and ethos, but which we cannot display.

Our solution is to enrich and enhance what we can use with newly-written letters by anyone connected with the movement, past and present. If you are, or were, a Sea of Faith member, if you remember the programme, or you were influenced by the movement, then we want to hear from you.

If you contribute a letter, your letter will:

- Be part of an exhibition here at Gladstone’s Library in September 2024
- Be held in a new companion archive: the ‘Sea of Faith Legacy Collection’

We may also use quotations from submitted letters as part of presentations during the weekend, but we will contact you first.
Deadline: Friday 12th July 2024.

Please use this form to submit your letter: Sea of Faith Letters Form (note, the deadline mentioned on this form has been extended to Wednesday 31st July 2024). All submissions sent before midnight on Wednesday 31st July will be considered.
