Using the Glynne-Gladstone Manuscript Archive

Before arriving at Gladstone’s Library

Once you have identified the material that you wish to consult you are asked to contact the library directly at [email protected] with the following information:
  • Name
  • Contact email address
  • Reader/Friend/Room number
  • Date and time required
  • Items you wish to consult
  • Any other comments or requests
Meeting the 'date required' is subject to staff availability and space in the Reading Rooms. Please wait for confirmation from a member of the library team before finalising your travel plans.
This ensures that the items and the collection that you wish to view is available and your visit to the library is as productive as possible.
A member of staff can also advise you on how to access and use the collection, including handling, recording access and how to return the collection. This is especially important for collections such as the Glynne-Gladstone Manuscript Collection which have different access conditions and also items that require staff to retrieve.

At the library

Access to the collections is during library staffed hours (9am - 5pm) only. The collections will not be available for the first and last 30 minutes of this period while the library staff retrieve and return materials to their storage. Access may also be limited 12 - 2pm.
When arriving at the library you will be asked to sit on a ground floor table of the Theology Room where you will be supervised by a member of staff at all times. A member of staff will bring you the materials requested and will be able to provide you with handling guidance should you require it. Only one folder may be consulted at a time.
You are welcome to use laptops/tablets with the collections but self-service photography is charged at a daily, weekly or monthly rate. See here for charges. Please remember that only pencils can be used around the collections, ink pens will not be permitted.
Due to the valuable and unique nature of the collections at Gladstone’s Library these are non-negotiable conditions of access.
