We have received a few enquiries about our conversion from sex-specific to unisex toilets. Here, we offer some clarifications.
The decision to convert to unisex has been taken after long consideration.
We have had numerous requests for an increase in unisex toilet facilities over the last few years.
As it is situated in an older, Grade I listed building, the loo provision at Gladstone’s Library is limited.
This move will mean that all guests will benefit from greater access to facilities, especially at peak times. For instance, previously, women could only use a small fraction of the toilets on site.
All our lavatories are situated in closed cubicles, so the privacy of all users will be maintained.
Essentially, the only shared space in the loo near the Reading Room is the hand wash area.
The toilets near the restaurant have their own hand basin, dryer and sanitary disposal unit, and are closed from floor to ceiling, so the only shared space is the entrance and exit corridor.
There is also an individual accessible toilet next to the Gladstone Room, which is stand-alone.
All facilities are regularly checked and cleaned to a high standard.
Finally, Gladstone’s Library prides itself on being inclusive to all, and these changes are designed to allow all guests to use our facilities in safety and comfort.
Thank you.
