Gladstone's Library remembers Don Cupitt

by |

It was with great sadness that we heard on Sunday of the death of Don Cupitt. Don was a great friend and supporter of the Library and was loved and admired by staff and visitors alike. He will be missed.

To mark the 40-year anniversary of Sea of Faith we held a conference at the Library last autumn, hosting a series of talks and workshops and exploring a little more of the archive we hold here, deposited by Don in 2011.

It was my privilege to record an interview with Don to open the conference and although his body was frail, I could clearly hear and see the sharp intellect and deep love of learning that had shaped and inspired so many students, viewers and friends over the years. At the conference itself I heard people share so eleoquently and movingly how Don's writings and talks had changed their lives. But they also spoke about Don the man - his kindness and generosity. It was an inspiring conference and a great tribute to him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
