Explore and understand the many hidden codes and languages used to hide the deeper meanings of works of art throughout Art History; from Celtic Myths via the Renaissance, to today
Adrian Sumner trained at Liverpool College of Art (1970-73) and has been involved in many aspects of the Visual Arts ever since. He has lectured at Universities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Ekaterinburg (in the former Soviet Union) and is a Member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art.
He has delivered over 150 different lectures on most aspects of Western Art and is an accredited lecturer in The Arts Society (former NADFAS) Directory. He has organised numerous exhibitions in Britain and abroad, including exchange exhibitions in Italy, France, Germany and the former Soviet Union. He also works as a professional painter and illustrator.
Programme
10.15am Registration and refreshments
10.30am: session 1: Decoding Famous paintings. A beginner’s guide to ‘illumination’, and how to speak the language of the Great Artists.
11.30am: short refreshment break
11.45am-12.45pm session 2: When is a ‘Symbol not a Symbol’? When used by a ‘Symbolist’ painter, of course! We explore how French and Belgian artists of the 19th Century conspired to produce ‘the Decadence’. This session includes the most important artist you’ve never heard of.
1pm: two course lunch in our restaurant
2pm: session 3: Hieronymus Bosch: The Garden of Delights’. Unlocking the most mysterious painting in the world: most talked about, most written about and still full of secrets.
3.00-3.15pm short refreshment break
3.15-4.15pm: session 4: The Ghent Altarpiece. Jan Van Eyck’s great masterpiece, and the perfect light to cure the darkness of Bosch.
