Events Calendar...
It is 150 years this year since Gilbert and Sullivan scored their first major success with Trial by Jury. A century and a half on, their collaborations, collectively known as the Savoy Operas, continue to be regularly performed by leading opera companies, dedicated and enthusiastic amateur societies and university and college groups.
In this weekend course, Professor Ian Bradley, an internationally recognised expert on Gilbert and Sullivan, shares his knowledge and love of the Savoy Operas in a light-hearted and informative way. He explores the contrasting backgrounds and philosophies of the two men, their place in British theatrical history and the way in which they created the genre of modern musical theatre. A public lecture during the course will uncover their particularly legacy to and influence on Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.
Lectures will be interspersed with video presentations of several of the Savoy operas. There will also be a session devoted to the sacred compositions of Arthur Sullivan, whose first and greatest love was church music, and there will almost certainly be an opportunity to sing along to some of his irresistible tunes.
